What is TESOL?

TESOL is the teaching of English to speakers of other languages. It encompasses teaching English to students of all ages, nationalities and backgrounds in most countries around the world.

In practice, this means that anyone who uses English as a second, third or even fourth language may need a TESOL English teacher at some point.

If you imagine how many foreign people you may have come across who have some degree of English ability, you start to get an idea of the size of the Industry. In the UK alone, it is estimated that the TESOL industry contributes some six billion pounds a year to the economy.

Globally, this figure is similar in other English speaking countries such as Australia and the United States. In many cases, a person’s worth on the job market is determined by their English ability. For example, a Japanese graduate in automotive design would be more likely to secure a position with a large manufacturer if they can communicate at a high level in English. In times of economic uncertainty, the need to maximise one’s desirability on the job market increases and the number of English teaching positions within the industry increases to fill the extra demand.

What can TESOL do for you?

If you are looking for a change of career or a new challenge, TESOL could be for you.

If you are looking for the opportunity to work, travel and explore new horizons, TESOL is definitely for you.

With possible job opportunities in virtually any country you can think of, (many of which pay substantially more than the national average of that country) a good TESOL qualification will increase your employability and professional standing in the UK and abroad. Positions within the industry can be full or part time and hours can often be flexible enough to suit your needs. Very few professions offer the opportunity to work abroad so easily but there are also numerous opportunities to be found in the UK.

English is spoken as a second language by over 200 million people and is recognised as an official language in 53 countries. It is an important skill for business people around the world and is often the working language for business meetings and large companies. Opportunities within the industry can range from working with high-profile business people in blue-chip companies to teaching underprivileged children in less developed countries.

Whatever direction you choose to pursue in the industry, below is a taste of the more exciting scenarios you could encounter if you pursue a career in TESOL compared to an ordinary “9 to 5”.

What does the course consist of?

The four week course is intensive but rewarding and is structured to ensure that you get the best from your time training to become a teacher. At the end of each week, you will have completed a number of assignments and tasks. Each week has been designed to complement the next and you will undertake assignments and  mini-projects in a specific order to ensure that your learning is as seamless as possible.

Your course will consist of these 5 main units:

Teaching skills

This is the main unit in which you will gain real teaching experience with genuine language learners. you will cover teaching methodology, create a teaching practice journal and a teaching observation journal.

 Language awareness

In this unit you will cover English grammar, phonology and aspects of linguistic understanding.

Learner profile

In this unit you will analyse an English learner and diagnose their strengths and weaknesses. You will then help them with a specific area of their learning and provide recommendations for their continued studies.

Materials assignment

This unit will enable you to plan, produce and adapt all kinds of learning materials.

Unknown language

Designed to let you experience and study teaching techniques, this unit will put you in the shoes of your potential students. You will find out what it is like to learn a language you have no knowledge of and you will gain experience of the teaching methods taught on the course.

To give you a more rounded understanding of the topics covered, you won’t come across the five units above in the order they are presented here. Some aspects from different units may be taught alongside each other and it is beneficial that you learn some things before others.

At the end of the course, you will meet a representative from Trinity (the course validating body) who will ensure that you are ready to progress to teaching professionally.

Course Assessment

In order to graduate from the course, you must achieve a pass in each of the five units in the table at the bottom of the previous page.

Each unit is weighted differently but is no less important in ensuring that you pass the course.

Four of the five units are assessed in house by ourselves but the materials assignment will be assessed by an external examiner from Trinity who will visit at the end of the course to ensure, amongst other things, that you are happy with the service we have provided you.
